Houghton is particularly remembered by Irish fans for scoring two important goals for the Irish national team. His goals resulted in a 1-0 win over England at the 1988 European Championship and a victory over Italy in the 1994 World Cup. At club level, Houghton is best remembered for his success at Liverpool during the late 1980’s. Houghton played a large part in the club's league title win during the 19987/1988 season.
